HISTORY OF CHAPARRAL BAPTIST CHURCH

Moncks Corner South Carolina

Give unto the Lord, O you mighty ones, Give unto the Lord glory and strength. Give unto the Lord the glory due His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. Psalm 29:1-2

Chaparral Baptist Church began as Shiloh Baptist Church, February 2, 1979 in the garage of Aubrey and Thelma Walker. We had approximately 30 people meeting there at that time.

After searching for some land that would be suitable for a church, we decided to purchase 115 Domingo Drive. We had to have $13000.00 by July of that year. With the many pledges we were given, we were  able to purchase the land we are now on. The land was deeded to the church on July 13, 1979. At that time we had a 12 X 70 singlewide mobile home given to us providing we make the final payments. By the blessings of God, we had the money by the due date. After moving to our new place, we felt we needed to have guidance from an established church; so we sought out help from Gethsemane Baptist Church. They agreed to help; and we became Gethsemane Baptist Mission in January 1981.

For sometime we had a school bus behind the mobile home with a connecting porch. We removed the seats from the bus and that became our nursery and children's classes. Later on we had another mobile home donated to us and we replaced the bus with it. That gave us more classrooms and a new nursery area.

In 1982 Tall Pines Baptist Church gave us the building we started out in. It's the building we were in until 2012, with updates having been made throughout the years. Including building a porch on the front, under pinning, purchasing new pews, handicap ramp, and other small changes. Also, in 1982 we were constituted as Chaparral Baptist Church, and applied for membership in the Screven Baptist Association and was accepted at the annual meeting, which was held in the fall at Memorial Baptist Church in St. George, South Carolina.

On September 21, 1989 hurricane Hugo damaged our mobile homes. we had a gift of $10,000.00 given to the church, with that money, what we had and what was donated into a building program, everyone had a mind to work and we worked when we could, but on every Saturday morning we would meet at Lena Lee's (one of our seniors citizens) home for breakfast and then go to church to build. We would stop for lunch and then back to work. We had a wonderful time in fellowship as we worked. We finished the building in the summer of 1990. The building: 28' X 80' divided up as 28' X 30" fellowship hall, 6 12' X 12' rooms, 2 bathrooms, 6' X 12' pantry, 12' X 12' kitchen, and a 20' X 8' porch.

In 2002 a new steeple was put on the sanctuary and later that year the parking lot was paved.

2007 we had a smaller sign put on the corner of Domingo and Highway 176.

In 2008 a handicap ramp was built on the side door porch.

In 2009 we purchased a portable baptistery and held our first baptism in the fellowship hall, baptizing nine; Henry Rogers, Tom Ranly, Gloria Macdonald, John Bowen, Maria Alexander, Becky Fenton, Sierra Fenton. It was a wonderful day of celebration ending with dinner.

In 2010 we purchased an ice machine, a printer, copier/scanner/fax machine.

In the year 2011 we signed a contract to build a new Sanctuary. Ground breaking began in October.

2012 we added parking lot spaces, some landscaping and moved into our new Sanctuary.

In 2013 someone donated a commercial refrigerator and a new microwave. Funds were raised to purchase a new matching stove. A concrete walkway was poured to the Youth Den. A storm door and peep hole was installed in the side door. Added insulation was blown in the fellowship hall attic. The sign out front was re-lettered and new handicap signs were installed. The Carnes Crossroads Civic Center land was cleared and cleaned off to allow passersby to see our church so that prayerfully they will want to stop in.

2015 This year we installed more lighting with two new lamp posts in front of the church. Twelve round tables were donated for the fellowship hall, two office chairs, and cabinets for the Sanctuary bathrooms. The nursery classroom was taken out to allow for more room in the fellowship hall. This year we had our first wedding in the new Sanctuary.

2016 was another great year in Christ. This year alone sixteen people joined our church and were baptized, with more awaiting baptism. A new air conditioning unit was installed in the fellowship hall. We welcomed Michael Combs in concert.

In 2017 again Michael Combs came and ministered to us through song. we started enclosing the back porch of the Youth Den. We formed the Walter Sewell Chapman Sr. Memory Garden, and took 3rd place in the RA Camporee Racer Race.

2018 Between this year and the last forty people with us in serving our Lord and several were baptized. The back porch was completely enclosed by an anonymous builder. A swing set was purchased for the kids to play on. Also, this year we have two deacons in training.
